The short version: Alark collects only what it needs to make the app work. We don't sell your data. We don't share it with advertisers. Your morning is yours.
1. Who We Are
Alark ("we," "us," or "our") is a mobile application that lets friends record short video messages that play as alarm calls. Alark is developed and operated by Ryan Morabito. You can reach us at hello@alark.app.
2. What Information We Collect
We collect information you provide directly when you use Alark:
- Account information: Your name, email address, username, and profile photo when you create an account.
- Videos you record: Wake-up video messages you record for friends' alarms are stored securely in Firebase Storage.
- Alarm data: The alarms you create, including time, repeat schedule, and label.
- Friend connections: The list of users you add as friends within the app.
- Usage data: Basic app usage information such as when alarms fire, whether videos are watched, and reaction data (emoji responses).
- Device information: Device type, operating system version, and push notification token for delivering alarms.
3. Optional Information
- Contacts (optional): If you grant permission, Alark can scan your contacts to find friends already on the app. Phone numbers are hashed (SHA-256) before any comparison — raw contact data is never transmitted to our servers.
- Phone number (optional): Used only for contact matching as described above. Never used for marketing or shared with third parties.
4. How We Use Your Information
- To operate the app — delivering alarms, storing and playing wake-up videos, managing friend connections.
- To send push notifications for alarms, new videos, and reactions.
- To improve the app based on usage patterns.
- To respond to support requests.
We do not use your information for advertising. We do not build advertising profiles. We do not sell your data to any third party.
5. How We Share Your Information
We share your information only in these limited circumstances:
- With other Alark users you connect with: Your display name, username, and profile photo are visible to your friends on Alark. Videos you record are visible to the alarm owner.
- Service providers: We use Firebase (Google) for authentication, database, and storage. These providers process data only as instructed by us and are bound by data processing agreements.
- Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users.
6. Camera and Microphone
Alark requests access to your camera and microphone solely to record wake-up video messages. We do not access your camera or microphone at any other time. Videos are uploaded to Firebase Storage and are only accessible to the intended alarm recipient.
7. Push Notifications
Alark uses push notifications to deliver alarms and notify you of new videos and reactions. Time-sensitive notifications (which can break through Focus mode) are used exclusively for alarm firing — never for marketing messages.
8. Data Retention
- Videos are retained until you or the alarm owner deletes them.
- Account data is retained until you delete your account.
- You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from the Profile screen in the app.
9. Children's Privacy
Alark is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at hello@alark.app and we will delete it promptly.
10. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal information. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@alark.app. We will respond within 30 days.
11. Security
We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted data transmission (HTTPS/TLS), Firebase Security Rules to restrict data access, and secure token-based authentication. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
12. Third-Party Services
Alark uses the following third-party services:
- Firebase (Google LLC): Authentication, database, and file storage. Firebase Privacy Policy
- Expo / React Native: App framework and push notification delivery.
- Apple Sign In / Google Sign In: Optional authentication methods.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, via push notification or email. Continued use of Alark after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
